It's appalling that we have to constantly live in fear of senseless acts like this. We can't even walk down the streets without worrying about whether or not we'll make it back home. It's a sad reality, but one that we've unfortunately become accustomed to.
It's important that we call out this violence for what it is - a direct attack on Black lives. We can't allow these incidents to be brushed aside or treated as just another statistic. Each and every one of these victims had a family, had dreams, had a life that was cut short because of someone else's disregard for their existence.
We need to demand better from our communities and from our leaders. We need to take a stand against gun violence and work towards creating safer spaces for all people. We need to invest in resources that address the root causes of these issues, like poverty and systemic inequality.
No one should have to live in fear of losing their life on a daily basis. As we pray for the recovery of the victim in Mississauga, let's also hold space for our collective grief and take action towards creating a world where Black lives truly matter.
